Canadian company

ZOLEO satellite communicators, honestly.

ZOLEO is a Canadian company — Roadpost Inc. of Toronto. Their satellite communicator gives you two-way messaging and SOS via the Iridium network, paired with an app on your phone, everywhere cellular doesn't reach. We resell the device; there's no install — it just works.

What it does

The ZOLEO device connects to the Iridium satellite network and pairs with your phone over Bluetooth. From the app you get two-way text messaging with anyone — not just other ZOLEO users — plus check-in messages, GPS location sharing, weather forecasts, and an SOS button that reaches a 24/7 emergency response coordination centre with your coordinates.

It also bridges networks automatically: where cellular or WiFi is available it uses those (free), and switches to satellite only where they're not. One device, one app, one thread of conversation — whether you're at the marina or fifty kilometres past the last tower.

Who it's for

  • Boaters — Desolation Sound, the Discovery Islands, the west coast: some of BC's best cruising is beyond cellular range. ZOLEO keeps you reachable and gives you SOS where your phone is a brick.
  • Remote workers — tower techs, forestry crews, field staff working beyond coverage who need check-ins and emergency comms.
  • Lodges and guides — guest safety and operations comms for properties past the last site.
  • Backcountry travellers — hikers, hunters, and anyone whose route leaves the coverage map behind.

Pricing

The device is currently listed around $209–$269 CAD, and monthly plans run about $25 / $45 / $70 CAD depending on message volume — verify at purchase; prices move. Plans can be suspended in months you don't need it, which matters for seasonal use. Email info@rapiddeploy.ca for current pricing and to order.

Field note

The cheapest safety gear you'll own: I work at height in places with no signal. A satellite messenger isn't a gadget — it's the difference between a bad day and a rescue. If you or your crew work past the last tower, carry one.

What it can't do

It's not broadband. ZOLEO is messaging — texts, check-ins, SOS — not internet. No browsing, no streaming, no video calls.

It's not a phone replacement. It doesn't make voice calls and it doesn't replace your cell plan. It pairs with your phone to cover the places your phone can't reach on its own.

It needs sky view. Like all satellite devices, it needs a reasonably clear view of the sky — deep in a slot canyon or under dense canopy, messages queue until the device sees satellites.

Is ZOLEO a phone replacement?

No — it’s messaging, not broadband: two-way texts, check-ins and SOS, no browsing, streaming or video calls. It pairs with your phone over Bluetooth to cover the places your phone can’t reach on its own.
